Missing Bear Head

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

This past Sunday I attended the Open Cartooning Studio that is held monthly at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. While we were wrapping up shop, David Steinlicht asked if anybody wanted this die-cut bear head that had been found in the street. This thing measures at 16 x 20 inches and was an absolute chore scanning in, but I thought it would be cool to share.

So, if anybody misplaced a large die-cut bear head in Minneapolis, you need not worry. It now has a home in my office.

The Tuesday Duggan: Nice Overalls

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Here’s our beloved hero marching down the aisle; American Flag and 2 x 4 in tow. However, good ole Hacksaw isn’t in his regular getup. Instead he is sporting the latest wrestling fashion trend - black overalls with what looks like the Silver Age Captain America’s shield.

Oh yeah, what the hell is up with the cage dancer in the background? Where is he fighting, The Deuce Deuce? For those unaware, the 22nd Avenue Bar (or as it is affectionately referred to “The Deuce Deuce”) is a bar/strip club located in Northeast Minneapolis - the club is not necessarily a tourist destination.

The Tuesday Duggan: Is That a Shower Curtain?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Good ole Hacksaw. Posing for a picture for his loving fans, but what’s this? Is he posing for this picture while standing in the bathroom? Is that a shower curtain in the background? Perhaps it’s a dentist’s office? My dentist’s office has a curtain similar to that. Perhaps Hacksaw is correcting that underbite? If so, I sure hope it doesn’t affect the way he shouts “HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Super Fantastica Comix Summer 2008 Edition — Call for Submissions

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Hello Friends!

After the last two, moderately successful releases of Super Fantastica Comix, we are now taking submissions for the Summer 2008 edition — although a bit later than expected! Below is all of the pertinent information.

Theme: PSA

Comic Dimensions:
Submissions lengths must be between one to six pages, black and white, or greyscale. All pages will be printed at 5.5″ x 8.5″ including an eighth inch gutter on all sides. Therefore all art must not exceed the printable dimensions of 5.25″ x 8.25″. Make certain to include your name, title of the entry, and a web address (if applicable) on the first or last page of the entry.

Biographies: Each artist must compose a biography of no more than 100 words. Make certain to include your name, previous works, and any applicable contact information (i.e. web addresses, MySpace accounts, etc.).

How to Submit:
We will take submissions both digital and physical.
If you choose to send your submissions digitally please format them at 800 dpi for black and white and 300 dpi for greyscale. Please save images as JPG or PSD file formats. Attach the files, along with how you would like to be credited, to superfantasticacomix at hotmail dot com
If you cannot send your submissions electronically, please contact superfantasticacomix at hotmail dot com and we will determine another method of shipment. Prior to submitting to this anthology, please contact superfantasticacomix at hotmail dot com with a rough estimate of your page count, so we can take into account the approximate size of the book and make a contingency for printing options.

Deadline:
The solid deadline for submissions is Saturday, September 6th, 2008 at 11:59 PM CST (yeah, I know, only a month). These books will be released in September and will be available at establishments generous enough to carry them and at the MCBA Fallcon from on Saturday, October 4th and Sunday, October 5th 2008, which is the premiere comic convention in the upper midwest and in its 20th year! Twin Cities. For more information on the MCBA Fallcon, please visit their website.

Availability:
Along with the usual shops in the Twin Cities, these books will also be available at Quimby’s in Chicago, Green Brain Comics in Detroit, and Vault of Midnight Comics in Ann Arbor. Additional sites will become available as the deadline approaches.
If you have a shop that you are aware of that consigns or purchases mini-comic anthologies, please e-mail superfantasticacomix at hotmail dot com with the appropriate contact information.

Compensation:
Each participant will receive one free copy of Super Fantastica Comix — not much I know, damn the economy. If the participant would like extra copies, they can pay for them at cost. Generally speaking cost will be half of the cover price. Cover price will be determined by the amount of contributors to the book.

Exclamation point!

The Tuesday Duggan - Who’s This Guy?

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

When I started collecting pictures of Hacksaw at work a few months ago and sending them to my colleagues with various associated messages I came across this gem.

The man on the right has a website devoted to distributing flower seeds to cancer survivors. On this site he is posing with other celebs such as Pam Anderson and Ray Romano and looks to be enjoying his time.

However, this photo just seems awkward. I’m assuming it’s because the gentleman on the right doesn’t seem to know why Hacksaw has insisted on applying a devastating nerve pinch on his upper left trapezius muscle until he surrenders a goofy grin and thumbs up.

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jam Tomorrow!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Come one come all to the St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jam this Thursday, August 21st, 2008!

Just mere hours after the “Great Minnesota Get Together” (a.k.a The Minnesota State Fair) opens its gates a few miles up the road we will be putting together a jam comic. You in?

Oh, you’re going to actually GO to the Fair? On opening day? Hmmm…

Well, if you’ve had your fill of Fried Hotdish on a Stick and are tired of walking past the 4H building for the sixteenth time, come on down, join us, take a load off, and enjoy an iced coffee.

The jam will be at:
Cosmic’s Coffee Shoppe
189 Snelling Ave N.
St. Paul, MN 55104
(Northwest corner of Snelling and Selby)

Sometimes we get froggy and head on over to grab a brew at:
O’Gara’s Bar and Grill
164 Snelling Ave N
St. Paul, MN 55104
(Southeast corner of Snelling and Selby)

Just bring some drawing utensils, an idea for the jam, and a few bucks to get a tasty beverage — the baristas really do appreciate that. Any pre-jam ideas/topics can be posted here.

New bewilderedkid comix and a broken website to boot!

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The new bewilderedkid comix can be viewed here. In order to get back to the main page you will need to, well, hit the back button.

There was a major bug in the other portion of the site, which wasn’t allowing me to post there. Hopefully it will get fixed at the latest, this weekend. In the meantime, you will not be able to view the archives — if there are any out there that do.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

FIXED!

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Well, for the time being at least. The software installed on the portion of the site that was hosting bewilderedkid comix crapped out on me, but I upgraded a few things and it seems to work now.

However, all of the comments are lost. Which is a tragedy since I pride myself on this webcomic being a democratic experience. Such is life, I guess. Wordpress = Diebold?

Also, I put together a new little template that will show the thumbnails for that week’s comic — I included it below. Hope that removes some of the confusion with how to get to the comics.

There will be another upgrade in the future to the main part of this site, in order to avoid the crash from earlier this week.

Thanks again for the patience!
